"The Evolution of Beauty" presented by its author, Professor Richard Prum

Most evolutionary biologists think that sexual ornaments in nature- like the peacock's tail– have evolved because they encode honest information about objective mate quality. Darwin, however, proposed that sexual ornaments evolve because they are beautiful to the animals themselves. From this Darwinian view, animals are active agents in their own evolution. Through examples from his research on manakins, pheasants, birds of paradise, and other birds, Richard Prum the William Robertson Coe Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and professor of forestry and environmental studies, will show us that contemporary evolutionary biology needs to embrace an authentically Darwinian, aesthetic perspective on sexual selection to adequately describe the natural world.

Navigating Route 66

Join your classmates to share our “Route 66” adventure. Our parents told us it would be a clear path, a defined ladder up . . . because we were “educated”.   We have come to realize that life is a crazy, winding road with left turns, crashes and wild rides. Exciting, often fulfilling, ever challenging us. It’s been “sex, drugs and rock ’n roll” —with  love and loss, joy and disappointment!

Reunion weekend provides us with a singular chance to look at the route—to date—and  share our ruminations. How did those four years at Yale help or hinder us? Where have we traveled since? What were the surprises? Where will the road leads next? We need your reflections (750 words/2 pages) by May 10 to yale73submitforfridaypanel@gmail.com to help us assemble our Friday panel on Navigating Route 66.  (Please state at the end that we may publish or quote from your rumination at the 45th Reunion.)  CLICK HERE FOR  FURTHER DETAILS ON THE CLASS FACEBOOK PAGE.

NOTE: This is a separate effort from the digital class book organized by Steve Hagen!

During this time, Bill was invited to train for the priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, the result being a forty-year career serving in more than twenty-five parishes, “the tenements of faith.”
